"[Motherhood] changes you in more ways than you can possibly imagine. And there's the normality of it which I find difficult - it means that you can't admit that there are difficulties"

"Motherhood is so common that it is hard for a woman to feel special or unique. If everybody is doing it, then it ought to be easy!"

Quotes taken from Life After Birth, Helen Figes

Motherhood challenges us to give our time, energy and soul in looking after our child(ren). Our sense of who we are, our relationships and needs change. At times we give out so much and have little left to help ourselves or seek that help from others. Although becoming a mother can be the best thing that has ever happened it can also be the most demanding.

How do you get the support that you need as a mother? What happens when your feelings go unnoticed? All too often mothers can feel isolated, confused, undervalued, misunderstood, guilty, resentful or tired. Just like a petrol gauge in a car your feelings can be telling you that you are running low.

West Sussex Counselling is running a one day workshop

Suitable for any mother, or those in the mothering role, of children under 5 years who wants to take care of herself. These workshops will run at intervals throughout the year.

What is the workshop for?

Two facilitators, experienced and qualified, will provide the opportunity for mothers to share their experiences and feelings with others with the intention of being cared for, understood, and valued. As a participant you will meet other women and be able to be real about your feelings so you do not feel alone. We will explore what your needs are and how far you are able to get these met. The more you share your feelings the more you will realise what these feelings arise from. Some feelings arise simply out of the challenge of a new baby. Some feelings arise from unresolved experiences from the past that motherhood can throw to the surface. Although the workshop will be challenging it is designed to be fun. At the end of the day I expect that each person will feel as if they have done a major peice of work but will feel hopeful and refreshed.

Costs and other practical details

The group will run on a Saturday 10am - 4pm and be held in Worthing, West Sussex. The day costs £60.

The next workshop is 13th October 2007
